Spelling, Word Division, Omissions, and Typos

Introduction

The lessons that follow focus on helping you build your knowledge of English usage. Most proofreaders are weaker in some areas of usage than others. As a result, these lessons help you become more attuned to all types of mechanics errors and learn usage rules that you may not have learned in your school or university studies.

Each assignment will include individualized prescriptions for you based on the diagnostic tests you have taken.

Objectives

When you finish this lesson, you should be able to
  • proofread for spelling problems
  • proofread for word-division problems
  • avoid the spelling and word-division problems that were present in your diagnostic tests

Demonstration of Competence

You will demonstrate your competence in Diagnostic Test 2.

Assignments

Read Orr, Daniels, and Henson, pages 4-13, 37-42.

We have included omissions and typos in this lesson because you may not know when an error is spelling or keyboarding. You must mark them in any event. Read Orr, Daniels, and Henson and complete each task as it is presented. The exercises will help you fine tune your ability to proofread for keyboarding problems. Check your work by comparing it with the author's proofreading at the end of the book.

Read Troyka, pages 388-389, 467-470, 490 (8th edition).

Practice:

Practice proofreading the text in Orr, Daniels, and Henson on pages 14-20 and 44-50.
