Consistency, Parallel Constructions,
and Correct Facts

Objectives

When you finish this lesson, you should be able to explain
  • What to look for to ensure that constructions are parallel
  • How to proofread for consistency
  • How to proofread for incorrect facts

Authors must write using consistent and parallel constructions throughout the document. As you proofread, be diligent in comparing headings, use of terms, format, use of abbreviations, and other elements that must be consistent throughout the document. When you notice an element that might be presented inconsistently, look back at previous uses to be sure they are identical in structure.

You will not normally proofread for content, but if you notice content that seems to be incorrect, query the author about it. However, for documents that have numbers and facts that must be correct, look at all numbers and facts to be sure the author has typed them correctly. For instance, ZIP codes may have only five numbers. Do a separate read through the document checking numbers, spelling of people's names, and other facts that must be correct.

Demonstration of Competence

You will demonstrate your competence in Diagnostic 1.
